Quartet\u2019s performances, combining music-making of the utmost subtlety with playing of exceptional intensity. Their programmes are distinguished by innovative and distinctive dramaturgies, realised through interpretations of remarkable clarity and precision. (\u201cenormously intelligent and knowledgeable programming\u201d \u2014 Rondo Magazin)<\/p>\n<p>The quartet is a welcome guest at Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonie de Paris, the Konzerthaus Vienna, Philharmonie Cologne, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the BBC Proms, performing with partners such as J\u00f6rg Widmann, Nicolas Altstaedt, Nils M\u00f6nkemeyer, Dominique Horwitz, Daniel Ottensamer and Elisabeth Leonskaja.<\/p>\n<p>The Signum Quartet\u2019s discography is a testament to their stylistic range: alongside the greats of the quartet literature, they have recorded works by Wolfgang Rihm, Thomas Ad\u00e8s, J\u00f6rg Widmann, Kevin Volans and Erkki-Sven T\u00fc\u00fcr. Their recording of T\u00fc\u00fcr\u2019s Second String Quartet <em>Lost Prayers<\/em> for ECM won Classical Album of the Year at the Estonian Music Awards 2021, followed by \u201ca dark flaring\u201d, an album devoted to South African compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries, which received the prestigious Italian critics\u2019 award <em>Premio Abbiati del Disco<\/em> in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Their Schubert trilogy for PENTATONE began in 2018 with the multi-award-winning \u201cAus der Ferne\u201d (Diapason D\u2019Or, OPUS Klassik), followed in 2020 by \u201cIns stille Land\u201d, which deepened their exploration of the connections between Schubert\u2019s string quartets and songs (\u201cThe Signum\u2019s \u2018Death and the Maiden\u2019 is up there with the best from a crowded field\u201d\u2014The Strad). In 2023, \u201cLebensmuth\u201d completed the trilogy, continuing this dialogue between Schubert\u2019s quartets and songs, and won the OPUS Klassik 2024 for Best Chamber Music Album of the Year. The project received much media attention and was featured on Deutschlandfunk, BBC In Tune and BR U-21. Contributing composers included Caroline Shaw, Brett Dean, Bruno Mantovani and Sebastian Currier.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Signum Quartet launched their <a href=\"https:\/\/signumquartet.com\/en\/bridge-the-chasms-that-divide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBridge the chasms that divide\u201d<\/a> project, commemorating 30 years since the fall of apartheid in South Africa. For this, they invited some of South Africa\u2018s most original and powerful voices to reflect on their own experiences and journeys before and after 1994, including composers such as Abel Selaocoe and Dizu Plaatjies. The project featured premieres at the K\u00f6lner Philharmonie and Berlin\u2019s Pierre Boulez Saal, with an album of the commissioned works forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>On Bremen\u2019s \u00dcberseeinsel, the Signum Quartet has created <a href=\"https:\/\/signumopenspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>SIGNUM open space<\/em><\/a>, their home for artistic work, exchange and collaboration. Supported by the Senator for Culture of Bremen from 2024\u20132026, the centre is based on the former Kellogg\u2019s factory site and brings together rehearsals, concerts, workshops and interdisciplinary projects.
